The global air travel industry continues to see robust growth, with Revenue Passenger-Kilometers (RPKs) rising by 11% year-over-year (YoY) in April 2024. This growth has been largely driven by increased international traffic, which surged by 15.8% compared to April 2023. Notably, the Asia-Pacific region has led this trend, nearly doubling the growth of other regions, reflecting the return of international travel demand in that area. Passenger load factors (PLF) remained high, averaging 82.4%, and surpassed pre-COVID levels, showing that airlines are filling a greater proportion of available seats compared to recent years.
Domestic travel also showed positive momentum, with Australia leading growth at 6.9% YoY. Although growth rates in markets like China and the United States slowed slightly, ticket sales for both domestic and international travel in May and June are projected to be 12.5% higher than the previous year. This indicates sustained global demand for air travel as the industry enters its peak season.
The supply of available seats, measured by Available Seat-Kilometers (ASK), grew by 9.6% YoY, closely tracking the expansion in passenger traffic. The report also highlights significant route-specific growth in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, with the Middle East–Asia route exceeding its pre-pandemic peak. Increased air travel between Africa and Asia reflects strengthened economic ties, with a YoY RPK growth of 56.5% in April, further fueling industry momentum.
