Airbus’s latest 20-year market forecast anticipates significant growth in global aircraft demand, projecting 42,430 new aircraft deliveries by 2043. This forecast reflects a 4% increase from previous estimates, driven by a strong post-pandemic recovery in 2023 and rising demand across both commercial and cargo sectors. The report highlights Asia, particularly China and India, as key growth regions, with India’s expanding international operations especially contributing to the projected increase. Airbus head of marketing, Joost Van Der Heijden, notes that Indian carriers are increasingly launching international routes traditionally served by foreign airlines.
Single-aisle aircraft will comprise the majority of this demand, with a projected 33,510 new single-aisle planes needed, driven by 18,700 new additions and 14,810 replacements. The cargo sector is also set for substantial growth, with a forecasted 3.1% annual increase in cargo traffic, largely due to the boom in express deliveries. In response, Airbus expects to see 2,470 new freighters over the period, 62% of which will be converted passenger aircraft.
While Airbus’s projections are optimistic, the manufacturing sector faces challenges from supply chain bottlenecks and quality control issues. Airbus recently revised its 2024 delivery target from 800 to 770 aircraft due to part shortages and delays in engine supplies, with annual profit expectations adjusted down from €7 billion to €5.5 billion
