The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently published its June 2024 global passenger demand data, revealing a steady growth trajectory across all major regions. Here are the highlights of the report.
Passenger demand, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK), increased by 9.1% in June 2024 compared to the previous year. Airlines responded with a capacity increase, or Available Seat Kilometers (ASK), of 8.5%, achieving an average load factor of 85.0%, up by 0.5 percentage points (ppt) from June 2023.
– International Travel: International RPKs rose by 12.3% year-on-year, with ASK up by 12.7%. The load factor for international flights slightly decreased to 85.0% (-0.3 ppt).
– Domestic Travel: Domestic RPKs grew by 4.3% year-on-year, and domestic capacity was up by 2.1%, yielding a load factor increase of 1.7 ppt to 85.0%.
IATA’s Director General Willie Walsh emphasized that high load factors reflect the strength of demand, especially as the peak travel season kicks off. He underscored the importance of operational efficiency to minimize delays as traffic remains high.
Each region showed year-over-year RPK growth, with significant gains in Asia-Pacific and Africa:
– Asia-Pacific: RPK increased by 22.6% compared to June 2023, maintaining strong demand with a load factor of 83.0% (-0.2 ppt).
– Africa: African airlines posted a 16.9% increase in RPK with a notable 7.4 ppt gain in load factor, reaching 77.0%.
– Europe and North America saw moderate gains, with European carriers achieving an 87.4% load factor and North America leading at 88.7%.
The Africa-Asia route had the highest growth, expanding by 38.1%, driven by increased connectivity and economic ties between the two regions.
This growth reflects aviation’s role in fostering global connectivity as countries lift restrictions and travelers return to the skies. IATA’s full report provides further details on market trends and load factors across regions.
